Hello from Sequoia and Kings Canyon vol.3

The sky was clear and blue in Sequoia National Park this morning, but only for about an hour. Right after breakfast clouds started covering the mountains again. My first stop of the day was Morro Rock, a granite dome that looks out over the Great Western Divide, a mountain range in the Sierra Nevada. The path to the top of the dome is steep and narrow, but not too long. Unfortunately the top of the dome was completely covered by clouds and I couldn’t see the valley below.

Hello from Sequoia and Kings Canyon vol.2

I woke up this morning to the rumble of thunder and the sound of heavy rain. Fortunately the weather cleared up a bit after breakfast and I was able to see more of Sequoia National Park.

Hello from Sequoia and Kings Canyon

Hello from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. These two national parks are located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, south of Yosemite National Park. The entrance to Kings Canyon is about 50 miles east of Fresno, California. On the way to the park you climb from an elevation of around 1,000 feet to over 7,000 feet above sea level. I drove through a few clouds along the way.

Jack London State Historic Park

JLSHP-PlaqueOver Labor Day weekend I went to Jack London State Historic Park in the small town of Glen Ellen, California. It’s about an hour north of the Bay Area in the Sonoma Valley. Jack London was an American author and adventurer who became one of the first internationally successful fiction writers. Much of his writing is based on his experiences during the Klondike gold rush of the 1800’s and later travels to the islands of the South Pacific. His novel “The Call of the Wild” was an instant success and has been in print since it’s first publication in 1903. Continue reading

Greetings from Vancouver vol.4

It’s my last night in Canada before flying home. I spent most of the day in Victoria before taking the ferry back to the mainland. This morning I took a short taxi ride to the eastern side of the city to see Craigdarroch Castle. The castle was built in the late 1800’s by Robert Dunsmuir. He came to Vancouver Island from Scotland as a young man and became wealthy after discovering a large coal deposit. He never spent a night in the castle because died before it was completed.

Greetings from Vancouver vol.3

I’m writing to you from Victoria, the capitol of British Columbia. This morning I took a ferry across the Georgia Straight (ジョージア海峡) to Vancouver Island. It was a little chilly(ひんやり) on the deck of the ferry, but the views were spectacular(壮観).

Greetings from Vancouver vol.2

Today I drove north from Vancouver to the other side of the Burrard Inlet to explore some of the parks on the North Shore. After stopping for a quick breakfast, I headed to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. The park is named for a 450 foot long suspension bridge that crosses 230 feet above the Capilano River. The bridge swayed back and forth a lot more than I expected!

Greetings from Vancouver vol.1

Greetings from Vancouver, British Columbia. This is my first trip to Western Canada.  It’s a very beautiful place with a long shoreline and rugged mountains in the distance.

When I go to a city that I haven’t been to before, one of the first things I like to do is see it from above, so my first stop today was to the Vancouver Lookout. In the picture below you can see part of Stanley Park, covered with trees in Vancouver Harbor.
