Hello from Sequoia and Kings Canyon vol.3

The sky was clear and blue in Sequoia National Park this morning, but only for about an hour. Right after breakfast clouds started covering the mountains again. My first stop of the day was Morro Rock, a granite dome that looks out over the Great Western Divide, a mountain range in the Sierra Nevada. The path to the top of the dome is steep and narrow, but not too long. Unfortunately the top of the dome was completely covered by clouds and I couldn’t see the valley below.

From Morro Rock I went to Crescent Meadow, a large grassy area with picnic tables and access to several trails nearby. I walked along the meadow and took a path through the woods that leads to a strange looking building called Tharp’s Log. Hale Tharp was one of the first settlers in the area, and Tharp’s Log is the summer cabin that he built out of a fallen, hollow sequoia.

At midday I drove back to Kings Canyon where I’m spending the last night of my trip. After lunch I went to Panoramic Point. To get there you have to navigate a very windy road that is barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other. The view from the top is definitely worth it, though. Even though it was cloudy, I could see the high walls of Kings Canyon in the distance.

My last stop of the day was the Big Stump Trail. It passes through an old logging site where all that’s left of many of the sequoias are huge stumps. Sequoia logging wasn’t very successful because the wood is soft and breaks apart easily. Fortunately, the logging of giant sequoias was stopped around 1920.

Tomorrow I’m heading home. I’ve enjoyed my time in Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. There’s so much to see that I think it would be worth coming back.
