Greetings from Vancouver vol.3

I’m writing to you from Victoria, the capitol of British Columbia. This morning I took a ferry across the Georgia Straight (ジョージア海峡) to Vancouver Island. It was a little chilly(ひんやり) on the deck of the ferry, but the views were spectacular(壮観).

image2When it got too windy, I went inside to the lounge and had a cup of coffee. There was even an arcade(ゲームセンター) and a gift shop on board. After an hour and a half on the water, the ferry docked at Vancouver Island and I headed to Victoria.

The city of Victoria was founded in the mid 19th century and many of the original buildings are still standing. Downtown Victoria is full of shops and restaurants and I spent the early afternoon looking for souvenirs. Victoria is also home to the second oldest Chinatown in North America.  Only San Francisco’s is older.

image3From Chinatown, I headed(向かった) south along the harbor walk towards the Parliament Buildings which opened in 1898 and have been in continuous use ever since. The harbor walk also passes by the Empress Hotel which opened 10 years later. There are beautiful flowers all along the way.

Before heading to dinner, I stopped at Thunderbird Park which is next to the Royal British Columbia Museum. The park is home to several totem poles and a historic schoolhouse.

I hope to see more of Victoria tomorrow before taking the ferry back to the mainland. I’ll write again soon.
